Chronic Pain

1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month from 12:15-1:15pm EST

On February 2, 2017, WVCTSI Project ECHO was expanded to include the treatment of patients with chronic pain. This expanded program allows rural health care providers to present chronic pain cases to a panel of experts that includes pain specialists, pain psychologists, and pharmacologists based at West Virginia University and receive mentoring in the management of such chronic conditions. During biweekly sessions, physicians are also educated on a variety of chronic pain topics including the neurobiology of pain, the role/impact of addiction, psychological issues associated with the management of chronic pain, and appropriate assessment and screening processes. (30 case presentations)

Learning Objectives:

  • Comprehend appropriate assessment, screening, and decision making process involved in treating chronic pain.
  • Identify the development and maintenance of chronic pain through a biopsychosocial perspective.
  • Describe chronic pain as a disease process, with an emphasis on neurobiology of pain, the role/impact of addiction, and common psychological issues in the management of pain.
  • Educate providers with patients that have chronic pain about evidence-based treatment options, the lack of efficacy for chronic opioid therapy, and their role in improving quality of life.
